Ms. Lucia began her career as a middle school teacher and quickly rose to become a district level manager. A few years later, she was honored to be hired as the founding administrator of a new middle school in that district. In that role, she implemented successful academic programs and cultivated a robust culture of community for more than a decade.
As a strong believer in many approaches to education, she founded a K-12 charter school and served as its Executive Director, building it from the ground up. She went on to work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and was invited to Stanford University to help shape the Measures for Effective Teaching project.
Knowing that she wanted to work on a school campus again, she came to work at Fairmont Preparatory Academy as the Dean of Advanced Studies. A year later, she was promoted to P-12 Director of Education where she implemented several new initiatives such as curriculum mapping, textbook adoption plans, and technology in the classroom. For four years, Ms. Lucia not only served as Director of Education, but held the dual position of Assistant Head of School at the Prep. In September of 2019, she was promoted once again, this time to Head of School of the Preparatory Academy. In 2020, Ms. Lucia’s role expanded to Managing Director of Fairmont campuses. It is joy for her to continue cultivating Fairmont excellence and working with such a talented group of educators and students.
Kristen Jansen has been part of the Fairmont community for more than a decade, serving in roles that span teaching, school leadership, and curriculum development. Now as Dean of Academics and Head of Learning at Fairmont Preparatory Academy, she leads with a focus on supporting students and teachers in the “good struggle” of learning, where challenges lead to growth and lasting success. Mrs. Jansen is dedicated to equipping teachers with the resources, training, and encouragement they need to create powerful learning experiences. By fostering professional growth and collaboration among faculty, she ensures that every classroom is a place where students are inspired, supported, and challenged to reach their full potential.
Patrick Zubiate is an accomplished educator and classically trained musician with leadership experience spanning elementary through university settings. He currently serves as Dean of Students at Fairmont Preparatory Academy in Anaheim, CA, following prior roles as department chair and coordinator of visual and performing arts for Fairmont Schools. A former Director of University Choirs at Chapman University—and an ongoing adjunct professor—he has also taught at Cal State Fullerton and The University of Iowa, consistently growing program enrollment and leading student performance tours across Europe and Mexico. His performance career includes appearances at major venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and Segerstrom Hall, as well as work for Disney Pictures, Warner Bros., and FOX. Most recently, he performed on the 2022 GRAMMY®-winning Best Choral Performance recording with Gustavo Dudamel, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Before entering education, he worked in private enterprise as a division manager for a Minneapolis-based company. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Chapman University, a Master’s in conducting and pedagogy from Cal State Fullerton, and is a doctoral candidate at The University of Iowa.

Anne Johnson is a dedicated academic and college counselor committed to guiding students in discovering their strengths and achieving their full potential. She earned her B.A. in History from Swarthmore College and her M.S. in Educational Counseling, along with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential, from the University of La Verne.
Before joining Fairmont Preparatory Academy in 2019, Mrs. Johnson served for over seven years as an Area Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Garden Grove, where she developed youth programs promoting leadership and community engagement. She later worked as Head Counselor at HS2 Academy, guiding students through every stage of the academic and college planning process.
After serving at both the Fairmont Prep and Fairmont San Juan Capistrano campuses, Mrs. Johnson returned to the Prep in 2024. She is known for her student-centered approach and dedication to helping each learner build confidence, explore interests, and prepare for success beyond high school.
Outside of her professional work, Mrs. Johnson enjoys pickleball, rock climbing, traveling, and spending time with her family and dogs—and even has a talent for juggling.
Darryl Foy is a dedicated academic and college counselor with extensive experience in higher education and student development. He holds a B.A. in History from Whittier College and an M.A. in Education and Human Development from The George Washington University.
Before joining Fairmont Preparatory Academy, Mr. Foy spent 13 years as Associate Director of Admission at Whittier College, where he also served as Assistant Coach for the Men’s Soccer Team. He has been part of the Fairmont Prep community for the past eight years, guiding students through the college admissions process, academic planning, and AP/IB curriculum pathways, while also contributing as an Assistant Soccer Coach.
Mr. Foy believes in empowering students through curiosity, confidence, and critical thinking. He strives to create an environment where students feel seen, supported, and motivated to achieve their goals.
Originally from England, Mr. Foy is an avid soccer enthusiast and Manchester United supporter. He also enjoys running half-marathons, traveling with his family, and watching classic films from the 1980s and 1990s. His passion for education and mentorship continues to enrich the Fairmont Prep community.
Julie Weems is a highly experienced educational counselor with over twenty years of service at Fairmont Preparatory Academy, where she has been an integral member of the school’s counseling team. She holds a B.A. in Child Development and Family Studies from California State University, Long Beach, an M.S. in Educational Counseling from National University, and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential.
As Director of Counseling, Ms. Weems leads the department with a vision focused on ensuring that every student begins high school with a strong foundation for academic and personal success. Her commitment extends beyond academics—she is known for building meaningful relationships that empower students to grow with confidence both inside and outside the classroom.
Guided by the belief that every student possesses unique strengths and untapped potential, Ms. Weems emphasizes connection, encouragement, and individualized support in her approach. Recognized among the Top 10 Orange County School Employees in 2021, she continues to be a driving force behind Fairmont Preparatory Academy’s tradition of student-centered guidance and excellence.
Dr. Justin Voss is a dedicated counseling professional with over two decades of experience in education and college admissions. He holds a B.A. from Lewis & Clark College, an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Concordia University, and an Ed.D. in Interdisciplinary Leadership from Creighton University.
Dr. Voss has served as a school counselor at Fairmont Preparatory Academy for 14 years, guiding students through academic planning, personal growth, and the college admissions process. Prior to joining Fairmont Prep, he worked in college admissions at Whittier College and Pitzer College, where he gained valuable insight into higher education and student success.
Passionate about demystifying college admissions, Dr. Voss emphasizes social-emotional learning and collaborates with faculty to align counseling with emerging trends in higher education. His student-centered approach empowers learners to discover their authentic goals and voices.
Named a Top Educator by Parenting OC Magazine (2022), Dr. Voss is also an avid musician who plays multiple instruments and enjoys classic films—particularly White Christmas. His expertise and enthusiasm continue to enrich Fairmont Prep’s holistic approach to student development.
Mariam Ahmed is a graduate of University of California Riverside with a BS in Business Administration and earned her Masters’ in Educational and Clinical Counseling from Azusa Pacific University. She brings a remarkable blend of business experience and academic counseling expertise that makes her exceptionally qualified to work with our Advanced Business Program students. Her true passion lies in helping students discover and pursue the higher education paths that best align with their goals, interests, and values. Her counseling approach is to foster self-discovery, informed decision-making, and building a foundation for lifelong learning and success.
Ming Liao holds a B.A. in Psychology from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and brings a strong background in student and family support to her role at Fairmont Preparatory Academy. She began her career with the school as a Homestay Program Coordinator before transitioning to Program Coordinator, where she helps students and families navigate the differences between American education and their home country’s systems.
Fluent in Mandarin, Ms. Liao is passionate about fostering smooth transitions, cultural understanding, and a balanced student experience. She believes that growth can be challenging or enjoyable—it all depends on how it’s supported and defined.
Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her two rescue dogs, whose joyful energy reflects her caring and compassionate spirit.
Nancy Nguyen is an experienced educator and counselor with over a decade of service to the Fairmont Preparatory Academy community. She holds a B.A. in English from California State University, Fullerton, and a Single Subject Teaching Credential in English, cleared through the Orange County Department of Education.
Before transitioning to academic and college counseling in 2019, Mrs. Nguyen taught English for 10 years at Huntington Beach High School, San Clemente High School, and Fairmont Preparatory Academy, where she began in 2012. Drawing on her extensive teaching experience, she began her counseling career with a focus on student development and college readiness. Mrs. Nguyen’s unique combination of skills and passion for supporting students has earned her recognition as a top-10 finalist for Parenting OC's School Heroes and as one of the "Top Employees" in Orange County for 2026.
In addition to her counseling work, Mrs. Nguyen serves as NHS Adviser, Textbook Coordinator, Co-Advisor for ASB, and Adviser for the Vietnamese Culture Club and Friday Night Live Club. As a College Essay Editor and UC Application Reader, she guides students through the admissions process with insight and care, helping them discover their authentic voice and confidence in their goals.
Fluent in English and Vietnamese, Mrs. Nguyen is dedicated to promoting student-centered independence and academic success. Outside of school, she enjoys family adventures, photography, crafting, puzzles, and time with her rescue pets.

Connie Aguilar has over 10 years of experience in education, including her recent role as the International Student Executive Director for Global Bridge Associates. With a keen attention to detail and excellent interpersonal skills, she is dedicated to providing exceptional service and expertise to the international education industry.Connie graduated from Cal State Northridge in 1993 with a degree in broadcast journalism and gained experience in television production and advertising agency work. She then spent a decade as a manager in high-profile investment banks such as Jeffries and Company and US Bank Corp Piper Jaffrey, specializing in mergers and acquisitions, gaming, and telecommunications.Her unique background in both finance and education has allowed her to develop a strong understanding of the needs and goals of the international student community. With her creative perspective and commitment to individualized service, Connie has built an impressive portfolio of satisfied clients.
Philip Martin is a highly experienced education leader and the founder and CEO of Global Bridge Associates. With a background in transformational and bilingual education, he brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his role.
Over the course of his 15-year career in school administration, Philip has led schools in both urban and international environments, including New York City, the United Arab Emirates, and China. His extensive travels to countries such as Vietnam, Brazil, Thailand, Turkey, and Nepal have given him a deep understanding of the cultural challenges that students, host families, and educators face.
Philip's broad experience in all aspects of the education industry, combined with his cultural sensitivity, has made him an invaluable resource to the schools he works with. His leadership skills and commitment to providing exceptional education services have earned him a reputation as a trusted and respected leader in the field.
Gabe Rusk is the Director of Debate at Fairmont Preparatory Academy and a member of the prestigious National Speech and Debate Association’s Public Forum Topic Selection Committee.
Mr. Rusk attended the University of Denver on a debate scholarship and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies and Philosophy. He went on to study at Oxford University, where he was the Vice President of the Student Union representing all international graduate students, and was elected as the equality officer at the Oxford Debate Union. He holds a Master’s from Oxford in Comparative Religious Studies. While in college, Mr. Rusk won 4th place at the National British Parliament Championships.
As a Public Forum Debate coach for the past decade and a half, Mr. Rusk has seen his students win and/or make finals at tournaments including UC Berkeley, UNLV, NDCA, ASU, Glenbrooks, Stanford, Georgetown, UK Season Opener, and the National Tournament of Champions (TOC). In 2024, one of the Prep’s individual teams had the highest TOC Gold Bid count, 8, by the end of the season. This, coupled with his own exemplary high school career in Public Forum competition (including winning the national TOC), makes him uniquely qualified to lead the nationally-ranked Debate team at Fairmont Prep.
In addition to serving as Fairmont Prep’s Director of Debate, Mr. Rusk has also been the director or senior instructor at over a dozen summer institutes, including the Institute for Speech & Debate.He believes debate and public speaking teach critical thinking and news literacy that are indispensable in the 21st Century, and has made it his life mission to spread such skills.

Joedy Gardner enters his ninth year as the Head Basketball Coach at Fairmont Preparatory Academy. Growing up in a basketball family, Joedy was heavily influenced by his father, Joseph Gardner, who played alongside Hall of Famer Jerry West at West Virginia University when they were ranked the No. 1 college team in the nation in 1957. His father went on to coach successfully at all levels for more than 35 years, making basketball a natural part of Joedy’s life.
Gardner served as captain of the 49ers basketball team at California State University, Long Beach in 1983 and 1984, under legendary coach Tex Winter. He holds multiple school records, including career leading scorer, and earned Academic All-American honors. He graduated with a degree in Business Management and Accounting before being selected by the Houston Rockets in the 1984 NBA Draft. Joedy played professionally for six years in both the U.S. and Europe.
As Fairmont’s Head Coach, Gardner’s program is built on the core values of Commitment, Discipline, Integrity, and Teamwork. He emphasizes representing Fairmont Prep with character, loyalty, strong academics, and athletic excellence. Gardner believes that winning traditions stem from consistent preparation and adherence to strong values—principles he teaches as essential in both athletics and life. His teams are known for their enthusiasm, discipline, and pride.
Gardner brings extensive coaching experience across multiple levels of basketball. He is the founder and president of Team Works Next Level Training & Mentoring, a program that serves NBA players, international athletes, and college and high school players. Notable clients include Tyson Chandler, Josh Childress, Sean Marks, Kevin Love, Brandon Jennings, Chase Budinger, Klay Thompson, and Taj Gibson. Eighteen of his former players currently compete in the NBA.
Joedy is married to Sheri Lynn Gardner, and together they have three children: Joshua Jerome (42), who serves in the U.S. Air Force Pararescue Division; Amanda Leigh (33), the Head Softball Coach at Miami University in Ohio; and Melissa Lynn (30), a singer-songwriter based in Nashville.

Alexis Price is a visionary leader in high school athletics whose commitment to excellence and inclusivity has transformed athletic programs and opened doors for student-athletes at every level. In 2025, she was honored as the California Female Athletic Director of the Year by the California Coaches Association—a well-deserved recognition of her outstanding leadership and impact. A former Division I collegiate athlete, Alexis competed in women’s golf at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, bringing the same competitive drive and team focus to her administrative career. With a Master’s in Sports Administration, she combines deep academic preparation with real-world experience to guide coaches and athletes toward success.Over a decade of coaching and more than six years as an athletic director have underpinned Alexis’s impressive record of achievement: under her direction, the program has earned over 50 league titles, captured five CIF Southern Section Championships, and achieved historic milestones in both girls and boys golf—earning the first-ever CIF-SS championships in school history for both programs.Individually, Alexis has been named Girls Golf Coach of the Year in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) from 2019-2023, and Boys Golf Coach of the Year from 2019-2024. Through program development initiatives, she has launched new sports, including boys volleyball (2019), esports (2020), fencing (2024), and girls flag football (2025), expanding opportunities for all students.Her professional affiliations include membership in the Global Community of Women in High School Sports, the California Coaches Association, and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. She also serves on the CIF-SS Small Schools Advisory Board—ensuring her influence extends beyond her own campus into the broader educational athletics community.
Off the field, Alexis is a proud mom of two young children—Louie (age 3) and Ashton (age 18 months)—and is married to her partner and fellow sports professional, Phillip Lopez. She brings the same energy, empathy, and strategic insight to her home life as she does to her athletic department.
Shane Beatty brings more than a decade of coaching experience across the club, high school, and collegiate levels, combining championship success with a passion for developing confident, competitive athletes. His coaching journey reflects a lifelong dedication to helping players grow and discover their potential on and off the court.From 2017–2025, Shane coached club volleyball, highlighted by leading Team Rockstar to the 2018 15U USAV Open National Championship. He has also served as the Head Coach at St. John Bosco High School and contributed to collegiate programs at Holy Names University and Long Beach City College, where he focused on strengthening fundamentals, elevating team culture, and preparing athletes for high-level competition.Before coaching, Shane built an impressive athletic résumé of his own. He competed professionally with the Blizzard Avalanche (2016) and excelled as a collegiate Setter at Hope International University, earning Setter of the Year honors in 2015, and at Grossmont College, where he was named 2011 PCAC Co-Player of the Year and a 2012 All-Conference selection.Shane’s competitive foundation began long before college. As a member of Seaside Volleyball Club, he won the 2010 USAV Open National Championship and earned Junior Olympics All-Tournament Team recognition. At Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, California, he was a two-time First Team All-Conference volleyball selection and also competed in varsity baseball.
Driven by energy, commitment, and a genuine love for athlete development, Shane continues to pursue his mission: to build strong teams, inspire young players, and contribute to the growth of the sport he loves.
Jasmine Hardy is a certified athletic trainer and performance specialist with a strong background in collegiate and professional sports medicine. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and her master’s degree in Athletic Training from California State University, Long Beach, where she also competed as a Division I basketball player for four years.Jasmine brings experience from working with the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA, adding high-level sports performance and athlete-care expertise to her clinical skill set. In addition to her athletic training certification, she is also a certified personal trainer, allowing her to integrate rehabilitation, injury prevention, and performance training into her approach.Jasmine is committed to supporting the health, safety, and performance of all student-athletes through evidence-based care and a holistic understanding of athletic demands.

Nick Ochoa holds a B.A. in Film and Media Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has been teaching at Fairmont Preparatory Academy since 2010. Before entering education, he worked in the film industry for three years, where he gained hands-on experience in production and earned the Best Produced Short Screenplay Award (2007) for a film he wrote in college.
Mr. Ochoa specializes in writing, editing, and storytelling techniques, encouraging students to create meaningful, original content. His philosophy centers on experiential learning, providing students with a safe, supportive environment to develop creativity while mastering professional filmmaking practices.
Outside the classroom, he enjoys movies, television, and traveling to New York each year to attend Broadway shows, fueling the artistic inspiration he brings to his students.
Dr. Afsaneh Miller is a seasoned science educator with over 20 years of teaching experience across grades K–12 in both public and private schools. She holds a B.S. and M.A. in Biology from California State University, Dominguez Hills, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Concordia University, Irvine.
A former Public Health Microbiologist and Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Dr. Miller brings real-world expertise into the classroom, where she emphasizes project-based learning, STEM education, and differentiated instruction. Certified in IB Biology and IB Environmental Systems and Societies, she is passionate about making science engaging and personally meaningful for all learners.
Fluent in English and Farsi, Dr. Miller finds inspiration in her students’ curiosity and growth. Outside of teaching, she enjoys hiking, photography, and cultural travel, and recently co-authored Stories of Resilience: Perseverance to Reach Completion in a Doctoral Program.
Alice Lee is an experienced English educator dedicated to fostering creativity, empathy, and critical thinking in her students. She holds a Bachelor of Psychology and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from York University in Toronto, Canada, along with additional qualifications in Special Education I and II from the University of Toronto.
Before joining Fairmont Preparatory Academy, Ms. Lee spent six years teaching at Zion Heights Junior High School for the Toronto District School Board, where she taught English and Special Education courses for both gifted students and those with developmental delays. She also served as English Department Head, leading initiatives that supported inclusive and differentiated instruction.
At Fairmont Prep, Ms. Lee teaches English literature through an artistic and analytical lens, encouraging students to engage deeply with characters, rhetoric, and creative expression through writing, poetry, and visual storytelling. Fluent in English and Korean, she is known for her kindness, patience, and compassion—qualities that help students feel valued and supported in their growth as learners and individuals.
Outside the classroom, Ms. Lee enjoys completing 1,000-piece Thomas Kinkade jigsaw puzzles, a reflection of her attention to detail and love of creative challenges.
Angie Trejo is an experienced educator dedicated to promoting inclusive communication and cultural understanding through the study of American Sign Language (ASL). She holds a B.A. in Deaf Studies from California State University, Northridge, and has been part of the Fairmont Preparatory Academy faculty for three years.
Ms. Trejo brings extensive experience in teaching ASL and Deaf culture, emphasizing visual learning, experiential instruction, and cultural awareness. Her classes engage students through storytelling, expression, and project-based learning, helping them develop both language proficiency and empathy for the Deaf community.
Fluent in Spanish and ASL, Ms. Trejo values multicultural education and the power of language as a bridge for connection. Outside the classroom, she enjoys traveling and exploring new languages and cultures, experiences that continue to enrich her teaching and inspire her students.
Ana Valeria Flores holds a B.S. from the University of California, Irvine, and an M.S. from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Before entering education, she worked as a project engineer on NASA-affiliated space missions, including contributions to the Mars 2020 project, bringing real-world scientific expertise into her classroom at Fairmont Preparatory Academy.
Ms. Flores specializes in quantum mechanics and computing, making advanced concepts accessible and inspiring for students. She believes in simplifying complex ideas and empowering learners to explore, question, and discover the beauty of how the universe works.
Fluent in Spanish, she has earned recognition as a Local PhysTEC Teacher of the Year, and her Physics Team has placed 8th internationally and 5th nationally in the Physics Bowl, with students earning distinction in the U.S. Physics Olympiad.
Outside of teaching, she loves Mustangs and sports cars, and lives by the quote: "Excellence is not an act, but a habit."
Ashley Martinez is an experienced English and language educator passionate about empowering multilingual learners to find their voice through authentic communication. She holds a B.A. in English from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a Master of Science in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from California State University, Fullerton.
With over a decade of experience, Ms. Martinez has worked with students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, guiding them through the challenges of language acquisition and adjustment to life in the United States. At Fairmont Preparatory Academy, she teaches English, Writing, and Language Seminar, emphasizing creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking through project-based learning.
Her teaching philosophy centers on a human-centered approach, recognizing the whole student and integrating social-emotional learning with academic growth. Fluent in English and Spanish, Ms. Martinez believes in meeting students where they are and inspiring them to take ownership of their learning.

Ashley Song is an accomplished music educator with over a decade of experience inspiring students through performance and creative collaboration. She holds a B.A. in Music Education from the University of California, Los Angeles and is celebrating her 13th year at Fairmont Preparatory Academy, where she has taught a wide range of courses including instrumental and choral music, AP Music Theory, Music Technology, Music History, and IB Music.
In addition to her teaching, Mrs. Song has co-produced seven musicals and served as an ASB advisor for eight years, fostering leadership and community through the arts. Prior to joining Fairmont Prep, she taught private lessons, coached ensembles across Orange County, and collaborated with organizations such as the LA Philharmonic’s Music Mobile Program and the Children’s Song Association of America.
Fluent in English and Korean, Mrs. Song is passionate about helping students discover joy, confidence, and connection through music. With her expertise in ensemble performance, music literacy, and creative teamwork, she continues to enrich Fairmont Prep’s dynamic fine arts program—one note at a time.
Bryana Haus is a proud Fairmont Preparatory Academy alumna (Class of 2007) with a B.A. in English and Screenwriting from Loyola Marymount University and an M.A. in TESOL currently in progress. She began her career at Fairmont in 2012 and has since served in multiple instructional and leadership roles, including ESL and Literature Teacher, Technology Coordinator, Canvas LMS Coordinator, Theater and Technical Theater Director, and Community Service Coordinator.
Ms. Haus integrates technology, experiential learning, and creative project-based instruction across her courses. Whether teaching English, supporting language learners, or directing theater productions, she blends mentorship and direct instruction to help students develop confidence, skill, and artistic voice. She also supports faculty by guiding curriculum innovation for 21st-century learners.
She views teaching as a form of mentorship, where meaningful growth happens through supported challenges and hands-on experiences. Outside the classroom, she loves traveling to New York City and attending Broadway shows, drawing inspiration from the art she brings back to her students. She is also a published playwright.
Brian Hand holds a B.A. in Anthropology from California State University, Fullerton, and completed graduate coursework toward an M.A. in Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Now in his tenth year at Fairmont Preparatory Academy, he teaches World History, U.S. History, and Mathematics.

Carrisa Montenegro is an accomplished psychology educator and program leader with over two decades of experience in teaching and counseling. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, dual M.A. degrees in Clinical and General Psychology from Pepperdine University, and is currently completing her Psy.D. in Psychology at California Southern University.
Mrs. Montenegro has been a valued member of the Fairmont Preparatory Academy faculty since 2005, where she teaches Psychology and serves as IB Diploma Program Coordinator. In addition, she is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Norco College, combining her academic expertise with a strong foundation in research and applied psychological practice.

Clara Gattenby holds a B.S. in Marine Biology from California State University, Long Beach, and is currently pursuing an M.Ed. in Secondary Education at Grand Canyon University. Now in her third year teaching Biology at Fairmont Preparatory Academy, she is passionate about making science engaging and accessible for all students.
Ms. Gattenby integrates her love of marine biology and conservation into her lessons, using hands-on, real-world applications to spark curiosity and critical thinking. She is committed to creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel valued and confident to explore scientific concepts.
In addition to teaching, she has served as Assistant Director for Fairmont’s Summer Camp and Cheer Coach, promoting teamwork, school spirit, and personal growth. Outside of school, she enjoys shell collecting, jewelry-making, and nail art.
Cory Hand is a veteran mathematics educator with more than three decades of experience in college preparatory education. He holds a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California, San Diego, an M.S. in Mathematics from the University of California, Riverside, and a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics from UC Riverside.
Mr. Hand has been a cornerstone of the Fairmont Preparatory Academy faculty for 20 years and has served as Mathematics Department Chair for 17. Over his 32-year career, he has also led several of Fairmont’s distinguished academic initiatives, including serving as Coordinator of the Engineering Magnet and Advanced Science and Engineering Program, and founding the school’s Advanced Math Program, which he continues to direct.
Specializing in advanced and post-AP mathematics, Mr. Hand teaches courses such as Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Discrete Math, Complex Analysis, and Abstract Algebra. His teaching philosophy centers on fostering intellectual curiosity while ensuring that every student is healthy, happy, and achieving their full potential.

Danny Benedetti holds an M.A. in Public Administration from California State University, Long Beach, and a B.A. in History from St. John’s University, New York. He brings an exceptional blend of academic experience, athletic leadership, and NCAA Division I coaching expertise to Fairmont Preparatory Academy.
A former Division I catcher at St. John’s, Mr. Benedetti earned multiple honors—including All-Big East Conference Team, Big Ten/Big East Tournament Team, Johnny Bench Watch List, and Scholar Baller Award. He also had the distinction of catching the first pitch ever thrown at Citi Field by MLB legend John Franco.
Mr. Benedetti has coached Division I baseball at five universities—CSUF, SDSU, Manhattan College, St. John’s University, and CSULB—along with experience in elite summer collegiate leagues. At Fairmont Prep, he teaches World History, U.S. History, Health, Criminal Justice, and Strategies for Success, while serving as Head Baseball Coach.
Fluent in English and Spanish, he aims to engage every student, connect learning to real life, and help young people grow into successful, well-rounded adults. Outside of school, he enjoys surfing, golfing, traveling, working out, and attending concerts and sporting events. His guiding motto: “Be on time and do things right."
Darrin Smith holds a B.S. in Biology from Biola University and a Master of Divinity from Westminster Seminary. His diverse teaching background includes substitute teaching, homeschooling his children, and full-time roles at Brethren Christian and Pacific Lutheran, where he taught courses ranging from AP Biology and Life Science to Anatomy, Astronomy, P.E., and Ancient Greek.
Now entering his third year at Fairmont Preparatory Academy, Mr. Smith teaches Biology, Environmental Science, and Marine Biology, and proudly coaches both the boys and girls varsity tennis teams.
He aims to make biology accessible while also revealing the profound complexity and beauty of life’s design. Guided by the belief that students bring color and meaning to every lesson, he strives to inspire lifelong learning and curiosity.
Outside the classroom, he enjoys spending time with his children, exercising, and staying active on the tennis court, at the gym, and at the beach.
Devan Rexinger is an artist and educator with eight years of experience teaching visual arts at the high school level. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts, with an emphasis in Painting, from Biola University. Ms. Rexinger joined Fairmont Preparatory Academy in 2022 after teaching for four years at Fairmont San Juan Capistrano and three years at Saddleback Valley Christian Schools.
Throughout her career, Ms. Rexinger has taught a broad range of courses, including Graphic Design, Digital Photography, Introduction to Visual Arts, Advanced Studio Art, and AP Studio Art and Design. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes process-based learning, encouraging students to take creative risks, think conceptually, and approach visual problem-solving with curiosity and persistence.
As a practicing artist, Ms. Rexinger’s work explores fiber arts, figurative painting, and design. Her piece “Broken Dishes” was featured in the All Media Exhibition at the Irvine Fine Arts Center in 2024, reflecting her ongoing engagement with both fine art and craft traditions.
Outside the classroom, she enjoys training for triathlons and baking sourdough bread, pursuits that mirror the dedication and discipline she brings to her teaching and artistic practice.
Diana Herrera holds a B.A. in History and a California State Teaching Credential with a BCLAD certification. She has experience teaching at both middle and high school levels, including at a dual immersion school in Santa Ana, where she taught World History in English and Spanish. At Fairmont Preparatory Academy, she currently teaches AP Human Geography and AP World History, drawing on her expertise in connecting global issues to students’ lives.

Diana Ramirez is a dedicated educator and technologist with a passion for fostering creativity, problem-solving, and innovation through computer science and robotics. She holds a B.A. in Psychology with a Minor in Education Studies from Eugene Lang College, The New School, and an M.S. in Computer Science from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Before joining Fairmont Preparatory Academy, Ms. Ramirez taught Web Development for Nucamp’s Online Coding Program and served as an Instructor for Google Summer of Code at CSU Dominguez Hills. At Fairmont Prep, she teaches Software Engineering and Robotics, guiding students to explore technology through hands-on learning and real-world application.
Since 2022, Ms. Ramirez has coached Fairmont Prep’s award-winning Robotics Team, which has earned multiple honors, including the Winning Alliance Award, Motivate Award, and Connect Award for community outreach and innovation.

Eugene Lee is an experienced educator specializing in English as a Second Language (ESL) and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). He holds a Master of Science in Education (TESOL) from California State University, Fullerton, where he also served as an adjunct faculty member. In addition to teaching at CSUF, he has instructed at Bethesda University of California and North Orange Continuing Education, developing curriculum across multiple levels of ESL and diverse language courses.
At Fairmont Preparatory Academy, Mr. Lee brings his passion for language learning and cultural connection to the classroom, helping students build both proficiency and confidence. He enjoys teaching American literature through a global lens—encouraging students from all backgrounds to engage thoughtfully with complex ideas, challenge assumptions, and explore new perspectives.
Fluent in English and Korean, Mr. Lee strives to empower students with the mindset and skills to become lifelong learners. Outside of teaching, he enjoys traveling, camping, photography with film cameras, and playing guitar. His international experiences—teaching in Cambodia and Korea—continue to shape his empathetic, globally minded approach to education.
Gabe Rusk is currently the Director of Debate at the Fairmont Preparatory Academy in Anaheim, California and is a member of the National Speech and Debate Association’s Public Forum Topic Selection Committee. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Denver where he attended on a debate scholarship and a Master’s Degree from Oxford University in Comparative Religious Studies. During college, he won 4th place at the national British Parliament championships. While at Oxford he was the Vice President of the Student Union representing all international graduate students and was elected as the equality officer at the Oxford Debate Union. While at Oxford his dissertation focused on the history of the First Amendment. During high school, Gabe was a Public Forum competitor himself winning the prestigious Tournament of Champions in 2010. Gabe has been a coach in Public Forum Debate for over fourteen years. Over that time his students have won or finaled at tournaments like UC Berkeley, UNLV, NDCA, ASU, Glenbrooks, Stanford, Georgetown, UK Season Opener, the TOC and more. In 2024 one of his individual teams had the highest TOC Gold Bid count, 8, by the end of the season. In 2025 one of his teams was the highest ranked PF team by the NSDA, DebateLand, and NDCA. Gabe has also been the director, or senior instructor at over a dozen summer institutes over the last fourteen years including as Curriculum Director. Gabe believes debate and public speaking teach critical thinking and news literacy that are indispensable in the 21st Century and has made it his life mission to spread such skills. In his spare him he loves to collect art, cook, and play video games. Currently he is focusing on homemade salsas and tortillas.
Hana Andal holds a B.A. in Sociology with a Minor in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine, and a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics from California State University, Fullerton. She has taught a wide range of math courses—from Algebra 1 through AP Calculus AB and Statistics—across traditional and alternative high school settings.
Ms. Andal specializes in technology-integrated, problem-based instruction, using tools such as Canvas, Desmos, Pear Deck, and iPads to promote collaboration, real-world application, and critical thinking. She has also led credit recovery programs, supported school accreditation, and taught AP and SAT/ACT math and science in supplemental education programs.
Fluent in English and Korean, Ms. Andal is committed to creating an inclusive, supportive classroom where diverse learners—including SPED and ELL students—feel capable and confident. An IB graduate herself, she brings an inquiry-driven, globally minded lens to her teaching.

Harrison Duxbury holds a B.A. in English Literature and History from California State University, Long Beach, and an M.A. in British and American Literature from the University of Kent. He has been a valued member of the Fairmont Preparatory Academy faculty for six years, teaching Art History, 20th Century Global History, and Modernist Literature.
Mr. Duxbury believes that learning thrives through dynamic interaction, critical thinking, and clear expression. His classroom emphasizes discussion-based learning, where students analyze historical and literary topics through inquiry and dialogue. By blending engaging lectures with opportunities for creative thought, he helps students develop strong analytical and communication skills.

Hayley Castanos is a dedicated physical education teacher and coach who brings passion, energy, and leadership to Fairmont Preparatory Academy. Now in her fourth year at Fairmont Prep, she teaches physical education and serves as the Head Coach for the Girls Volleyball Team. Ms. Castanos holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms and has a strong background as a former NCAA collegiate volleyball player.
In addition to her work at Fairmont, she has coached the Fairmont Prep Girls Volleyball Team and the Garden Grove High School Boys Volleyball Team, and serves as a Volleyball Tournament Director, organizing events that promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and school spirit.
Ms. Castanos is passionate about helping students develop confidence, resilience, and a lifelong appreciation for physical activity. She finds inspiration in watching students challenge themselves, grow through effort, and experience the joy of teamwork and belonging through sports. Outside of school, she enjoys playing volleyball and training her dog, Nala.
Heather Porretta holds a B.A. in History from the University of California, Irvine, and has been a dedicated member of the Fairmont Preparatory Academy faculty for over 20 years. Before joining the high school, she taught at Fairmont Private Schools’ junior high campus, building a long-standing career rooted in curiosity and a love of learning.
At Fairmont Prep, Ms. Porretta teaches AP U.S. History, inspiring students to think critically about the past and its connection to the present. Jon Fouse is an experienced educator and former investigator whose career reflects both analytical precision and a passion for teaching real-world economics. He holds a B.A. in Communication from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Social Science from Vanguard University, and a Certificate in Artificial Intelligence in Education from Vanderbilt University. He is currently pursuing an M.A. in Military History at the American Military University.
At Fairmont Preparatory Academy, Mr. Fouse teaches AP Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, blending rigorous content with project-based learning, simulations, and data-driven instruction. Juanita Aguilera holds an M.A. in Secondary Education from Loyola Marymount University and brings over 24 years of experience teaching Spanish at all high school levels. Karen Carrie is a seasoned art educator and multidisciplinary artist specializing in illustration, mixed media, and fashion and costume design. Ms. Carrie joined Fairmont Preparatory Academy in 2013, where she teaches a broad range of visual arts courses and leads students in studio-based learning, portfolio development, and creative exploration. Her work in costume and fashion design has been featured in numerous exhibitions, fashion shows, and theatrical productions, reflecting her dynamic engagement with both fine and applied arts.

Kinsey Ross holds a Master’s Degree in Education from National University and brings over 21 years of teaching experience across Orange County schools. At Fairmont Preparatory Academy, she teaches History, inspiring students to think critically about how ancient civilizations and human societies have evolved over time.

Mark Frontado is a passionate educator and coach dedicated to promoting fitness, confidence, and personal growth through physical education. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Northwestern College of St. Paul and a California Teaching Credential in Physical Education.
Now in his fourth year at Fairmont Preparatory Academy and fifth year of teaching, Mr. Frontado teaches Physical Education and Weightlifting and serves as Head Coach for the Girls Flag Football and Golf teams, as well as Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Boys Basketball program.
With over 13 years of experience in the fitness industry, Mr. Frontado brings expertise in biomechanics, strength and conditioning, and athletic training program design. He previously served as Strength and Conditioning Coach for the USA Olympic Badminton Doubles Team, preparing athletes Ryan and Phillip Chew for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Outside of school, he enjoys football, cooking, and baking, and is proud to be the only member of his family to have competed at the collegiate level.
Mark Hassoun is a dedicated mathematics educator with over 30 years of teaching experience and a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of California. Now in his 17th year at Fairmont Preparatory Academy, he teaches a wide range of high school mathematics courses, helping students build strong analytical and problem-solving skills that prepare them for advanced study.
Before joining Fairmont Prep, Mr. Hassoun taught at several distinguished Southern California schools, including Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, where he was recognized as Teacher of the Year for five consecutive years, an honor awarded by the student body.

Dr. Megha Shah is an accomplished science educator, program director, and department leader with a passion for cultivating curiosity, integrity, and innovation in young scientists. She holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences, a Teaching Certification, and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of California, Riverside, as well as an Ed.D. in K–12 Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California.
At Fairmont Preparatory Academy, Dr. Shah serves as Director of the Advanced Science and Engineering Program (ASEP), where she designs and leads rigorous, research-based experiences that integrate biotechnology, bioengineering, and applied innovation. With over 20 years of experience teaching high school science, she specializes in connecting hands-on laboratory work to ethical inquiry, critical thinking, and scientific communication.
Dr. Shah also mentors top-performing students in national competitions, facilitates college-level research collaborations, and fosters a supportive, intellectually vibrant learning community. Michael Wheeler is a veteran educator with over 25 years of teaching experience at the junior high and high school levels. He holds a B.A. in English from California State University, Fullerton and has taught in the Anaheim Union High School District, Santa Ana Unified School District, and at Fairmont Preparatory Academy.
At Fairmont Prep, Mr. Wheeler has been a dedicated member of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program since 2007, serving as Diploma Program Coordinator from 2015 to 2023. His expertise in IB curriculum design and assessment reflects his commitment to academic rigor and global-minded education.
Mr. Wheeler’s teaching philosophy centers on cultivating curiosity, critical reflection, and intellectual independence. He encourages students to engage in dialogue, question assumptions, and make meaningful connections between ideas and the world around them.

Natalie Charouhas holds an M.Ed. in Secondary Education, a Social Studies Teaching Credential, and a B.A. in Political Science. Her professional experience spans early childhood education, directing Fairmont’s SJC Summer Camp (2022), and six years as an acting coach at Young Actors Space, where she developed a strong foundation in performance-based instruction.
Ms. Charouhas incorporates project-based learning and film analysis to help students explore history and social science from multiple perspectives. She believes in treating high school students like young professionals, fostering a respectful, challenging classroom environment where learners feel heard, safe, and motivated to excel.

Preston Fawcett holds a B.S. in Computer Science from California State University, Fullerton, and brings valuable real-world experience to Fairmont Preparatory Academy as a former Navy Nuclear Engineer and CyberPatriot Mentor.
At Fairmont Prep, Mr. Fawcett teaches Computer Science and Engineering, emphasizing project-based learning and big-picture thinking. He enjoys working with motivated learners and supports their growth by providing resources, clear goals, and guided independence—helping students develop confidence as problem-solvers and self-directed thinkers.

Dr. Bob Varnold is an accomplished educator and scientist with a passion for helping students discover the beauty and interconnectedness of the natural world. He holds a B.A. in Science with majors in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Northern Iowa, an M.S. in Medicinal Chemistry from Purdue University, and a Ph.D. in Developmental Biology from the University of California, Irvine.
Before joining Fairmont Preparatory Academy, Dr. Varnold served as a Staff Research Associate IV at UC Irvine, where he headed the laboratory for the Dean of the School of Biology. He has also taught science at the Frederick K.C. Price III School in Los Angeles and has extensive experience teaching Chemistry, Biology, and Physics at the high school level.
Dr. Varnold’s teaching philosophy centers on helping students see how science shapes every aspect of their lives and the world around them. He encourages critical thinking, scientific literacy, and awareness of how science influences society and global issues.
Outside the classroom, Dr. Varnold teaches children’s church and writes weekly curriculum for students ages 5–12. An avid traveler, he has visited Machu Picchu twice, and lives by the motto, "Believe in yourself even when no one else does."
Rosana Silvestre holds an M.A. in Spanish from California State University, Fullerton, and is a native Spanish speaker with nine years of experience at Fairmont Preparatory Academy. She has taught multiple levels of high school Spanish, including AP Spanish Language and Culture, IB Spanish B, Honors, and CP courses, with additional experience teaching at the college, middle school, and elementary levels.
Ms. Silvestre specializes in language acquisition through cultural enrichment and is committed to student-centered, differentiated instruction that supports learners of all backgrounds and abilities. She integrates IB principles to build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and create an inclusive, multicultural classroom environment.
Outside of teaching, she enjoys music, traveling, and exploring nature, especially when spending quality time with her family.
Sanam Tavoosi holds an M.A. in Education from the Science and Research University of Tehran and brings over 27 years of teaching experience across elementary, middle, high school, and college levels. At Fairmont Preparatory Academy, she teaches Mathematics and English as a Second Language (ESL), with a special focus on supporting students on individualized education plans (IEPs).
Fluent in Farsi and English, Ms. Tavoosi is known for her patience, adaptability, and deep understanding of student learning styles. Having taught and studied across three continents, she draws on a global perspective to tailor instruction to each learner’s strengths and needs. Her goal is to help every student grow with confidence and reach their full academic potential.
Sandy Rabyy is an accomplished educator and department leader with over two decades of experience teaching English in both private and public schools locally and abroad. She holds a B.A. in English and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, along with teaching credentials in Secondary English and Health Sciences and certificates in TESOL and Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development from the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Gevirtz Graduate School of Education. She is currently a candidate for her Administrative Credential through UC Irvine.
Since joining Fairmont Preparatory Academy in 2011, Ms. Rabyy has been dedicated to strengthening students’ critical thinking and communication skills through personalized instruction and a globally oriented approach to language and literature. As English Department Chair, she leads with a focus on collaboration, curriculum innovation, and student-centered learning.
A lifelong learner, Ms. Rabyy continues to pursue professional growth in educational leadership, critical reading and writing instruction, and the ethical use of AI in education. An Orange County native, she enjoys spending time with her family and dogs, cheering on the Anaheim Ducks and Pittsburgh Steelers, and proudly advocating for the Oxford comma.
Shane Beatty holds a B.A. in Business Management with a concentration in Sports Management and an M.B.A. in Management and Leadership. He brings extensive experience in both education and athletics to his role at Fairmont Preparatory Academy, where he serves as Advanced Business Program Director, Assistant Athletic Director, and Head Boys Volleyball Coach.
Before joining Fairmont Prep, Mr. Beatty was Entrepreneurship Pathway Coordinator and Head Boys Volleyball Coach at St. John Bosco High School and an Adjunct Professor of Business at Rio Hondo College. He currently also teaches as an Adjunct Professor of Business at Syracuse University.
Specializing in business education and personal finance, Mr. Beatty emphasizes trust-based learning, guiding students to engage deeply and confidently in the learning process. Outside of school, he enjoys sports—and is surprisingly good at juggling.
Shaunna Croft holds a B.A. in English from Biola University and an M.A. in English from Southern New Hampshire University. She has been teaching English for 10 years, including eight years at Fairmont Preparatory Academy.
Ms. Croft is passionate about creating a classroom environment where students feel safe, comfortable, and seen. She believes in giving students choice and creativity in how they demonstrate their learning—whether through writing, art, music, or other expressive mediums. Her approach celebrates individuality while fostering confidence and a love for literature.
Outside the classroom, she enjoys reading, scrapbooking, baking, decorating, and spending time with family and friends, finding inspiration in creativity both inside and outside of teaching.
Sophia Trejo is an enthusiastic and student-centered English educator dedicated to making literature and writing accessible, engaging, and personally meaningful for all learners. She holds a B.A. in English from Vanguard University of Southern California, where she also completed the Integrated Teaching Education Program (TTEP), earning both her degree and teaching credential within four years.
Before joining Fairmont Preparatory Academy, Ms. Trejo taught at both the middle and high school levels as a long-term substitute in the Santa Ana, Garden Grove, and Newport Mesa school districts. Now in her second year at Fairmont Prep, she teaches high school English, specializing in literary analysis, writing instruction, and culturally responsive learning.
Ms. Trejo’s teaching philosophy centers on empowerment and belonging—helping students build confidence in their voices, think critically, and connect classic literature to modern life. She believes in fostering an inclusive classroom where every student feels seen, heard, and supported.
Inspired by her own mentors, Ms. Trejo strives to remind students that they are capable, valued, and full of potential—cultivating both academic skills and self-belief that extend far beyond the classroom.
Stephen Whitlock is a dedicated mathematics educator with a deep passion for helping students develop confidence and mastery in challenging coursework. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Chapman University and a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from California State University, Fullerton.
Mr. Whitlock has been a valued member of the Fairmont Preparatory Academy faculty for 15 years, where he has taught a broad range of courses from Geometry to AP Calculus ABC, as well as advanced college-level mathematics such as Advanced Discrete Mathematics and Number Theory. His primary areas of expertise and enthusiasm lie in Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus, where he focuses on making complex concepts accessible and engaging for all learners.
A proud Fairmont alumnus, Mr. Whitlock began his journey with the school as a student in 6th grade and has remained part of the Fairmont community ever since. In 2021, he was honored as one of Orange County’s Top 10 Teachers of the Year for his excellence in teaching and mentorship.
Outside the classroom, he enjoys all things Disney and Marvel, finding inspiration in their creativity, optimism, and storytelling—qualities he brings to his teaching every day.
Todd Gordon holds dual B.A. degrees in English and Religious Studies from the University of California, Riverside, and has taught high school English for 27 years, including Honors and AP-level courses. At Fairmont Preparatory Academy, he emphasizes project-based learning, literary theory, and intertextual analysis through works ranging from classic literature to comic books and speculative fiction.
Mr. Gordon believes every student can learn when given the opportunity and values literature as a medium for building both critical thinking and empathy. His students’ curiosity and engagement continually inspire him, and he takes pride in seeing graduates pursue meaningful careers in writing, education, and public service. Outside the classroom, he enjoys tabletop gaming, reading, and exploring pop culture.
Virginia Phipps is an experienced mathematics educator with a strong background in applied mathematics and over 20 years of teaching experience at Fairmont Preparatory Academy. She holds a Master of Science in Mathematics with a concentration in Actuarial Science from the University of Connecticut.
Ms. Phipps is dedicated to helping students understand mathematics not just as an academic subject, but as a practical tool for solving real-world problems. Her teaching emphasizes conceptual understanding, logical reasoning, and application-based learning, empowering students to make meaningful connections between mathematical theory and everyday life.
A lifelong learner and advocate for perseverance, Ms. Phipps brings enthusiasm and clarity to her instruction, fostering both confidence and curiosity in her students.
Outside the classroom, she enjoys gymnastics, a sport in which she competed at the collegiate level—an experience that continues to inspire her commitment to discipline, balance, and excellence in all areas of life.
Dr. Ying Li holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, with research focused on modern Chinese and British literature, film, and women’s studies. With over a decade of teaching experience at both the secondary and collegiate levels, she has been a vital member of the Fairmont Preparatory Academy faculty since 2012, where she serves as Chair of the World Languages Department.
At Fairmont Prep, Dr. Li teaches all levels of Mandarin Chinese, including AP and IB (ab initio, SL, and HL) courses. In her leadership role, she oversees curriculum alignment, instructional innovation, and faculty development, ensuring that language education remains rigorous, relevant, and globally focused.
Fluent in English and Chinese, Dr. Li is dedicated to providing culture-driven, content-based, and communicative instruction. Her teaching fosters cross-cultural understanding, critical thinking, and meaningful engagement with global perspectives.
