Visual & Performing Arts Program (VAPA)

Visual & Performing Arts Program (VAPA)

Fairmont’s VAPA empowers students to excel in artistic endeavors and to enter top colleges with prestigious art programs. Students complete 230 credits, combining rigorous core subjects and electives at College Preparatory (CP), Honors (H), and Advanced Placement (AP) level, and fulfill 20 hours of community service each year. All our courses are UC approved.

Fashion Design

Students take the lead in the fashion world through:

  • Fashion Design I (CP) - exploring fashion industry trends, mastering garment construction, and engaging in hands-on projects from illustration to upcycling, with opportunities to showcase work in fashion shows and business presentations.
  • Fashion Design II (H) - advancing design and construction skills, developing a personal fashion line and brand, and leading independent projects, with a focus on professional portfolio building and cultural studies for a comprehensive industry understanding.

Learners develop artistic skills and creative confidence through:

  • Intro to Visual Art (CP) - building foundational skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, and graphic design, exploring diverse materials and art history, and preparing for advanced courses
  • Advanced Visual Art (H) - advancing technical and conceptual abilities in a collaborative studio, creating a comprehensive portfolio, and deepening understanding of art history and personal expression.

Students envision projects and bring them to life in:

  • Graphic Design (CP) - mastering digital illustration, image manipulation, and professional studio practices while building expressive compositions and exploring art history
  • 2D/3D Art & Design (AP) - refining two- and three-dimensional design skills, creating a portfolio that demonstrates inquiry, experimentation, and sustained artistic development for AP evaluation.

Art History (AP)

At our international school in California, students cultivate a deep understanding of art history, analyzing works of art and placing them in historical context. They explore concepts such as culture and cultural interactions, theories and interpretations of art, and the impact of materials, processes, and techniques on art making.

Learners develop the ability to understand purpose and audience in art historical analysis, considering how individuals and societies respond to and represent their world through visual expression. The course encourages students to approach works from multiple perspectives, fostering critical thinking and appreciation for cultural diversity.

Drawing (AP)

Learners grow creative vision and technical mastery in AP Drawing, refining advanced drawing skills and applying them to original ideas. Through hands-on projects, they experiment with technique, develop a personal style, and build a portfolio that showcases their artistic growth.

Classes are a chance to spark curiosity, lead the creative journey, and prepare for college-level art study.

Intro to Speech & Debate

Students step up and own the stage in public speaking. They read, research and analyze, then bring words to life with their voice and body. Every lesson is a rehearsal space for curiosity and confidence as learners interpret published works, write and perform original speeches, and tackle impromptu challenges.

They lead discussions, present ideas and reflect on their growth. By performing for peers and teachers, students build real-world skills they’ll use for life.

Learners contribute to document the school year's events while building technical expertise through:

  • Yearbook I (CP) - mastering photography, graphic design, journalism, and teamwork while producing the school yearbook and refining digital skills
  • Yearbook II (H) - leading the yearbook team, advancing digital media and publication standards, and developing high-level skills in photography, editing, and marketing.

Filmmaking

At Fairmont Prep Academy, learners discover the art and craft of filmmaking through:

  • Intro to Film (CP) - exploring film history from its origins to modern blockbusters, and learning cinematic fundamentals
  • Intro to Digital Filmmaking (CP) - gaining hands-on experience with digital tools, discovering the roles of film professionals, and engaging in creative projects from concept to completion
  • Advanced Digital Filmmaking (H) - collaborating on large-scale productions in a studio-like environment, producing Husky Vision.

Students own the stage through:

  • Rehearsal & Performance: developing acting and production skills as cast and crew for two major Fairmont theater productions, mastering characterization, script analysis, improvisation, and technical stagecraft
  • Technical Theater II (H): advancing expertise in lighting, sound design, and set/prop fabrication, supporting school productions with hands-on technical work and collaborative problem-solving.

Music

Learners develop musical mastery and creative confidence through:

  • AP Music Theory - exploring advanced music theory at a collegiate level, building analytical skills and preparing for future study
  • Concert Choir (CP) - focusing on vocal technique and performance etiquette, singing diverse repertoire and performing at school events.
  • Advanced Concert Choir (H) - engaging in an intensive and advanced repertoire and musicianship
  • Chamber Ensemble (CP) - improving instrumental technique and musicianship, performing in concerts and festivals, and studying music elements and history
  • Advanced Chamber Ensemble (H) - advancing collaborative and individual artistry in an honors-level ensemble.

Standard curriculum

Students complete their journey progressing with the Fairmont standard curriculum, carefully designed to prepare students for collegiate study and analysis. They build their own journey choosing from subjects in the following departments.
