Our youngest learners begin their journey with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), exploring subjects through the six Units of Inquiry that facilitate application of knowledge to real-world settings.
Throughout our IB Preschool curriculum, chidren get curious and explore big ideas in real, connected ways. Every day, they investigate their environment, their community, and the natural world, asking questions, sharing discoveries, and making sense of what they see.
Learners step into six exciting themes and make connections between the classroom and the world exploring:
Unlocking a passion for words
Throughout the year, children build foundational literacy skills by exploring the alphabet, letter sounds, and phonics. Activities include identifying letters in their environment, matching spoken words to print, distinguishing between letters and numbers, and recognizing word spaces.
Students practice beginning sounds, rhyming, syllables, and alliteration, progressing from simple letter recognition to understanding how words are formed and read.
Developing logical thinking
Math learning is hands-on and integrated into daily routines, focusing on number recognition, value, and formation from 0 to 10. Children explore concepts such as comparing quantities, measurement (length, height, size), classification, sequencing, spatial awareness, and pattern creation.
Activities include sorting by characteristics, creating and describing shapes, and understanding basic map skills.
Exploring though experimentation
Science exploration covers physical life, earth, and health sciences through inquiry-based activities. Children investigate colors, the human body, senses, germs, plants, animals, weather, seasons, and materials.
Experiments include color mixing, observing changes in nature, cooking to explore states of matter, and STEM projects like building simple machines and exploring magnets.
Understanding the world
Social studies lessons introduce children to themselves, their families, and their communities, fostering a sense of identity and belonging. Topics include individual development, emotions, cultural traditions, community helpers, rules and responsibilities, geography, and economics.
Children learn about holidays around the world, map skills, weather and climate, and the roles of goods and services. Through stories, discussions, and hands-on projects, students build social awareness, empathy, and an understanding of their place in the world.
Unleashing creativity
Art activities encourage creativity and self-expression as children experiment with a variety of materials and techniques. Weekly projects include handprints, keepsakes, color mixing, seasonal crafts, and cultural celebrations, compare shapes, and participate in themed crafts for holidays and special events.
Through drawing, painting, and crafting, children develop fine motor skills, visual-spatial awareness, and an appreciation for artistic diversity, while connecting art to personal and cultural identity.
Freeing the inner self
Children explore rhythm, movement, and song, building confidence and coordination as they join in group activities during circle time. Each child learns to express themselves through music, dance, and even sign language.
Throughout the year, learners discover songs in different languages, try out a variety of instruments, and experience dances from cultures around the world. Highlights like the Winter Sing-Along and Pre-K graduation let students shine, presenting poems, music, and movement for their families and showing just how far they've come.
Growing through movement
Children strengthen both their small and large muscles through a wide variety of playful activities. Fine motor skills grow as they explore hands-on sensory activities or practice real-life tasks that prepare them for writing and kindergarten readiness. Large motor development is encouraged through obstacle courses, yoga, dance, nature exploration, and creative activities, both in the classroom and on the playground.
Learners enjoy lots of time outdoors, giving them the space to move, explore, and build lifelong habits of active, healthy play.
