Students aged 5 to 10 step into our Elementary School in California ready to lead, question, and grow. Every day, they spark curiosity, build confidence, and tackle real challenges through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). Here, learners drive their own learning, collaborating, experimenting, and reflecting as they master core subjects and life skills.

Students build strong reading foundations, mastering phonics, decoding, and fluency before progressing to comprehension, analysis, and novel studies.
Learners read and discuss stories, identify main ideas, make predictions, and explore themes, characters, and structure. By Grade 5, they confidently tackle chapter books, analyze texts, and use stories as catalysts for writing, growing into thoughtful, independent readers.
Expressing confidently
Learners develop writing and language skills through engaging lessons in grammar, mechanics, and creative expression. Starting with basic sentence structure and punctuation, learners advance to crafting multi-paragraph narratives, informative, and persuasive pieces.
Grammar concepts expand from nouns and verbs to complex sentences and proper mechanics. By Grade 5, students write with clarity, detail, and purpose, expressing ideas confidently and mastering the conventions of English.
Developing logical thinking
Students build math fluency and problem-solving skills from counting and number recognition in early years to advanced concepts in upper grades. Learners master addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, explore fractions, decimals, and geometry, and tackle real-world problems.
By Grade 5, students analyze data, work with variables and expressions, and apply math to everyday situations, developing confidence and resilience as mathematicians.
Exploring through experimentation
Students investigate the natural world through hands-on experiments and inquiry. Early years focus on the human body, weather, animals, and space, while upper grades explore energy, matter, ecosystems, and earth science.
Learners ask questions, record observations, and solve problems, building scientific thinking and curiosity. At the end of Elementary School, students analyze data, conduct experiments, and connect science to real-life challenges, preparing for future innovation.
Understanding the world
Students explore their communities, history, and the world, starting with school rules, holidays, and community helpers.
As they progress, learners study citizenship, economics, geography, and multicultural perspectives, diving into California history and government in upper grades.
Through projects, exhibitions, and discussions, students connect past and present, build critical thinking, and develop a sense of responsibility and global awareness.
Building digital literacy
Students master digital skills for school and life, starting with basic navigation and proper finger placement for typing. As they advance, students tackle logical thinking, programming, research, and problem-solving, learning to use technology responsibly and safely.
Each student secures their work in a private digital space, building confidence in web safety and netiquette. By Grade 5, students create presentations, code simple programs, and collaborate online, preparing to thrive in a connected, tech-driven world.
Learning a world language
Students build Spanish language skills through an engaging, effective approach that grows with them each year. Early learners sing, play, and role-play, while older students dive into grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. Cultural exploration is woven into every lesson, students experience customs, traditions, and celebrations from around the Spanish-speaking world, expanding their global perspective.
Technology enhances learning, and by Grade 5, students communicate confidently, understand cultural nuances, and use Spanish in real-life contexts.
Freeing the inner self
Learners explore artistic expression through a rich curriculum that introduces them to a variety of artists, styles, and mediums. From drawing and painting to sculpture and mixed media, students experiment, create, and develop a deep understanding of art principles and elements.

From Junior Kindergarten onward, students build music literacy, learning to read, write, and perform music, while developing rhythm, pitch, and ensemble skills. As they progress, students compose, improvise, and collaborate, gaining confidence and joy in self-expression.
Ensuring wellbeing
Learners develop lifelong fitness, teamwork, and resilience in a non-competitive, skill-building PE program. Early years focus on movement, coordination, and healthy habits, while older students refine sports techniques, strategy, and leadership.
Every session emphasizes sportsmanship, participation, and celebrating effort. Students reflect on progress, learn to handle challenges, and build confidence through constructive feedback.Â

Elementary students step up and take on new responsibilities every day. They collaborate on group projects, present ideas to their classmates, and dive into independent research that sparks curiosity and confidence.
Learners solve real problems, lead community service initiatives, and track their own progress, owning every milestone along the way. Growing up with the ISP Life Competencies and IB Learner Profile and Approaches to Learning frameworks, they develop leadership, teamwork, and presentation skills.

Learners broaden horizons taking learning beyond the classroom in exciting and skill-building travel opportunities, including overnight trips to Catalina Island Marine Institute Camp (Grade 5) and Sacramento (Grade 4). Day opportunities take students to Mission San Juan Capistrano, San Diego Zoo, Long Beach Aquarium, Local wetlands, and the Ocean Institute.
Students jump into the ISP Artists program, part of the annual International Learning Opportunities for Students (ILOS) from ISP, collaborating with international artists, joining hands-on workshops, and leading cross-campus projects. ILOS broadens global perspectives, sparks new passions, and prepares students to thrive in a connected world.
PYP Exhibition
In their final year of the IB Primary Years Programme, students step up and lead the PYP Exhibition, a collaborative, student-driven inquiry project that brings together everything they've learned. With teachers and mentors by their side, they investigate real-world issues they care about, take ownership of their research, and show off teamwork, agency, and presentation skills.
Music productions
Students at HAC light up the stage in music productions that bring the whole Elementary School together, from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 5. Every production is a rehearsal space for creativity, teamwork, and self-discipline. Music isn’t just about performing, it’s linked to stronger language, math, and reading skills, and teaches life lessons like patience, perseverance, and collaboration.
