We’re proud to announce the exciting addition of the Foundations program to our San Juan Capistrano campus. Foundations is a partner school that serves students from 1st through 12th grade who have learning challenges, such as dyslexia, ADD, auditory processing, and comprehension difficulties. The program offers an academic path that is separate from Fairmont but will be integrated within our campus life and electives. In addition to providing a groundbreaking approach to academic challenges, Foundations allows children with learning disabilities to have a school experience that is aligned with their peers.
Grounded in 30 years of cognitive brain research, the Foundations program moves past traditional symptom management for learning disabilities and, instead, addresses the root cause. It is based on the concept of neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to change, heal, and grow in response to targeted training) and implements cognitive exercises that are scientifically proven to strengthen weak cognitive capabilities. In the program, children learn a new perspective, build their confidence, and practice cognitive exercises as they advance to success. Students rise to reach their grade level, and perhaps even move beyond it, with a high level of confidence and a love for learning.
Foundations classes cover both cognitive training and academics and have no more than 16 students, with a 4:1 student-to-teacher ratio. At San Juan Capistrano, Foundations students will follow their specific program while participating in Fairmont electives such as P.E., Art, and Music, as well as Lunch and Recess. For example, a high school student will take six periods of Foundations classes with their program classmates and two periods of electives with students in Fairmont’s traditional program. Younger Foundations students work to reach their grade level in all subjects, and in high school, students may choose to pursue an Accredited High School Diploma or participate in the Certificate of Completion program.
This partnership is exciting for Fairmont students, as well as those in the Foundations program. We are thrilled to bring more young people together and to give children of many learning abilities a well-rounded school experience, exceptional training, and a stronger future. We also look forward to unifying families who have children of differing abilities, providing siblings with the chance to attend the same campus and enjoy a shared school experience. Foundations is truly like nothing else, and we’re proud to have this new partner in the future of Fairmont Schools – San Juan Capistrano.
