Prep Pride: Gratitude for Parents and Teens in the Midst of Change

As we have just completed Thanksgiving, it seems fitting to give one last glance back at the idea of gratitude. In the midst of student stress, as the first semester nears an end, it is nice to have a break, take a breath, and look back a bit.

Get to Know Your Teen

As parents, you know that the teenage years are hard. The child you raised is getting older, asserting his or her independence and getting swallowed up in everything school-related. Those quiet moments at home are few and far between. Especially for parents of seniors, things, unfortunately, will not be the same.

Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with your children. They may be a bit different now than they were growing up, and that is OK. Try to understand who they are now. Maybe you take a break from talking about school and college and simply communicate as people. Break down some of that wall, and let them know how you are feeling about everything going on. Don’t be afraid to share. Your kids need to know that you are human and deal with human emotions, as well.

Share with Your Family, and Give Thanks

Students, be sure to take a break, as well. You’ve been working hard, and your family has missed having you around. Spend time with them, and share about your life.

Be sure to take a moment to say “thank you” to all of those people who drove you to soccer practice, took you to piano lessons, had you over for dinner, and taught you. There are lots of people out there who helped you reach this level, and there will be even more as you go through college and beyond. Thank them. Maybe write a nice letter to your parents if you aren’t the type to get mushy in front of them.

It is easy to get so caught up with the holidays and the end of the semester that we don’t take the time to give thanks. Take a breath, say thanks, and try to reconnect.
