Fairmont Hosts 126 Colleges at 14th Annual Fall Open House & College Fair

On Tuesday, Fairmont Preparatory Academy welcomed representatives from 126 colleges and universities from across the nation, including some schools from across the world. Normally quiet during evening hours, the campus was bustling with students and their families as they hurried to the gym trying to get the most out of the evening’s college fair.

The gym’s basketball court was filled with tables and colorful signs from all of the schools represented, some local like Concordia University in Irvine, others from out of state like Drexel University in Pennsylvania, and others from out of the country like Yamanashi Gakuin University in Japan.

Students lined up at the tables waiting for a chance to speak with college representatives about the schools’ programs, student life, and what they need on their applications to stand out from other prospective students.

Fairmont Prep senior Albert C. was happy with the large variety of schools he was able to speak with.

“You have different options for different opportunities outside and inside of state, so it was pretty wonderful,” Albert commented after leaving the fair.

With each passing year, Fairmont Preparatory Academy’s Fall Open House & College Fair has attracted an increasing number of college and university representatives. Fairmont Prep College Counselor Chantelle Jackson-Boothby was pleased with the attendance this year with record numbers of both state schools and international.

“College representatives were in attendance from Canada, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom,” Jackson-Boothby shared. “The 126 schools in attendance were representative of nearly every facet of higher education, from small liberal arts campuses to large research institutions and professional art schools to military institutions.”

The event serves to provide both students from Fairmont and students in the surrounding communities an opportunity to meet with college representatives and have their college admissions questions answered. It’s an important event for students to attend as there are multiple colleges in one place to compare and, hopefully, to help students narrow down which ones are good fits for their interests and career goals.

As students learned more about their college options, Fairmont Prep also hosted an open house to introduce visitors from the community to its specialized programs, personalized guidance, and all that it offers its students. Visitors were treated to a message from Headmaster Robert Mendoza and then split up into breakout sessions based on individual interests in different Fairmont Prep programs like the Advanced Science & Engineering Program (ASEP), International Business Program, athletics, visual and performing arts, and more.
