Fairmont Private Schools: Students Succeed at Orange County Science & Engineering Fair Awards

Sunday night, students from 6th to 12th grade and their families gathered from across Orange County at Chapman University for the Orange County Science & Engineering Fair (OCSEF) Awards. As the award ceremony start time approached, Chapman’s parking lots filled quickly with families rushing to make it to Memorial Hall in time for their child’s moment on stage and possible award win.

The pillared building, though large in entry, hosted a packed auditorium of proud families and anxious students. Many parents stood around the crowded room, cameras out, ready to run closer to the stage for a photo of their child’s winning moment. The students sat together in rows by project category (Biology, Microbiology, Behavioral Science, etc.) and waited patiently for their turn to line up and receive participation, honorable mention, and first through third place awards.

Student Jian P. of the Historic Anaheim Campus was the first of our students to win an award for the night: first place in Fluids/Aerodynamics Junior Division. It was the first of many wins of the night for Jian. His science fair project impressed outside companies as well as the OCSEF judges. By the end of the night, he had won three more awards from the Office of Naval Research, The Orange County Engineering Council, and the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Student Nadia A. of the North Tustin Campus received second place in the Junior Division for Botany Applications for her project, Passive Xylem Filter for Bacterial Elimination from Waste Water. Nadia’s project went on to win four more awards that night. She left that evening with awards from the Association of Women in Water, Energy, and Environment, the Orange County Sanitation Department, and two special awards from OCSEF: the David Walkington Memorial Award and the Nat Lamm Memorial Award. Whispers of awe and respect were shared amongst the audience as Nadia walked up the stage stairs for the third, fourth, and fifth time.

Fairmont Private Schools students did exceptionally well in the OCSEF Chemistry, Botany, and Pharmacology/Toxicology categories with three winning/honorable mention student projects in each category.
