Challenging Students to Become Fairmont Fit

Hundreds of scientific studies have unequivocally shown that individuals who are physically fit perform better both academically and on standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, GRE, and the MCATS. Scientists have further shown that positive changes in fitness translate to larger changes in the long term memory center of the brain, creating a platform for successful learning and long term retention. As a result, higher aerobic fitness levels are a direct factor in cognitive recognition and memory performance. Additionally, students who exercise report less stress, greater feelings of empowerment, and are optimistic about their capabilities to cope in their daily tasks. In fact, all studies have repeatedly concluded that fitness is a significant predictor of academic performance.

With such empirical data available to validate the undeniable relationship between academic performance and fitness, Fairmont Private Schools has created Fairmont Fit, a program that goes beyond traditional sedentary academic learning practices and focuses on your child’s systemic development and progress. This program seamlessly integrates the personal fitness with superior academics to guarantee that your child has the best opportunity to succeed both in and outside of the classroom.

Some astonishing facts corroborate Fairmont’s heartfelt commitment to both you and your child:

1. Scientific studies show that aerobically-fit individuals had a 2.4 times greater chance of passing math tests and a 2.2 times greater chance of passing reading tests compared with aerobically-unfit individuals.

2. Schools which have implemented portions of a fitness-based curriculum structured with resistance, aerobic, and nutritional training have statistically higher standardized tests scores than schools with a skills-based curriculum.

3. Scientific studies published in the Journal of Pediatrics found a direct correlation between aerobic fitness and passing scores on standardized math and reading tests.

4. Many studies have shown a significant association between strategic fitness components and higher performance on standardized math and reading tests. Additional studies not only corroborate that fitness is a successful predictor in raising academic outcomes, but inherently agree that individuals with a strong foundation in fitness and nutrition are subject to a plethora of advantageous effects such as improvements in cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk profiles, decreased risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood, decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, improvements in bone health and development, improvements in mental health and well-being, and improvements in cognitive and academic performance.

Ultimately, to ensure every advantage for your student, Fairmont has integrated personal fitness and nutrition as a core pillar into our comprehensive educational scope and sequence, thereby reaching every student on a daily basis.

Here are a couple items to be looking out for:

1. Fairmont Fit integration into the classroom.
Dr. Mahar states that “The students we share our classrooms with don’t know life without constant connectivity, Wi-Fi, and a global audience. Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them? Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.” The Fairmont Parent Association at the North Tustin Campus recently donated the funds for a fully-equipped, dynamic academic/fitness classroom. This room is equipped with standard desks, standing desks, professional exercise bicycles, desk cycles, exercise mats, balance balls, and heart rate software to enable each student to become an expert partner in their own well-being.

2. Fairmont Fit integration into physical education.
Physical education programs will be restructured to complement the classroom academic component of Fairmont Fit. The P.E. Department will apply through direct application, the lessons learned in the classroom. As a result, the days of the week for the P.E. classes will be systematically structured to reflect the robust implementation of the material the students learn. To kick off to the program, the North Tustin Campus recently participated in the Southern California 5K.

This program is the first of its kind and will give Fairmont students unique attributes on their college transcript, as well as prepare them to be sound in body, mind, and spirit.
