Fairmont Prep Students Set Sights on National Debate Tournament

The high school debate team of Fairmont Preparatory Academy students Nick Palmer
(junior) and Austin Kim (sophomore) qualified to compete in this year’s National Speech
& Debate Tournament. They represent the first Fairmont team ever to qualify for the
national competition’s Public Forum category. The tournament, organized by the
National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA), will be held this June in Dallas, Texas.

Under the Public Forum category, the two-member team currently ranks 36th in the nation, seventh in
the state, and is the top team in the Southern California District. The announcement came after two
days of grueling debates at the National Forensic League (NFL) District Qualifier held at Carlsbad High
School last weekend.

To attend the national tournament, students must place among the top competitors at one of the 113
district tournaments across the country.
