ENGINEERING MAGNET

Fairmont Prep Academy has tremendous student success in math and science. Consistently over the last few years, the College Board and the Siemens Corporation have recognized Fairmont Prep as being one of the top math, science, and technology schools in California. This success led to the creation of the Engineering Magnet Program, which is designed to prepare motivated students to succeed at highly-regarded engineering colleges and applied science programs.

In our Engineering Magnet Program, students gain rare insight into the field through guest speakers, internships, coursework, and field trips. We are guided by an Advisory Board that helps us provide our students the optimal engineering experience. Professionals from various fields of engineering and from institutions of higher education meet to contribute to the development of the engineering program. Members of the Board represent universities and corporations that are interested in helping build the best possible program for our future engineers.

Engineering Magnet Courses:

  • Introduction to Engineering
  • Engineering Physics A
  • Engineering Physics B
  • Engineering Physics C
  • Engineering Internship
  • Engineering Research/Project
  • Computer Science
  • AP Physics C (E and M)
  • Multivariable Calculus
  • Differential Equations 1 and 2
  • Mathematical Structures 1 and 2
The courses are designed to supplement academic studies with a significant project-based component to foster students' interest and give them hands-on experience. A student may enter the program at the beginning of any school year and design a schedule based on his/her engineering interests, outside interests, and preparation to meet his/her future goals and ability.

Engineering Program Offers Students:

  • 12 university level courses not offered by other high schools
  • The opportunity to bypass most or all university (lower division) courses in math, physics, and engineering
  • Access to and instruction in the latest in educational technology and software in a state-of-the-art engineering lab
  • Internship partnerships with Boeing and local engineering firms

Magnet Advisory Board includes members from the following institutions:

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB)

With options in every discipline, and with a good degree of independent work required, guidance is a central part of our IB Program. Teachers, counselors and advisors help students experience the best of IB. With such a rigorous program and with such strong guidance, it is easy to see why our students are so successful in earning roughly one year of college credit and placement at top schools.

Fairmont is one of two independent high schools in Orange County to offer the IB diploma program. The IB diploma is recognized by colleges and universities around the world and requires special coursework, exams, and independent work.

Standard and Higher Level IB Courses include:

Group 1: IB English Literature HL
Group 2: IB French SL, IB Mandarin SL, IB Spanish SL
Group 3: IB History of the Americas HL, IB Philosophy SL
Group 4: IB Biology SL, IB Physics SL & HL
Group 5: IB Mathematical Studies SL, IB Mathematics SL & HL

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP)

Fairmont Preparatory Academy encourages students to challenge themselves with college-level AP coursework while still in high school. With AP classes in all areas of the curriculum, students can play to their strengths and individualize their course of study. AP classes prepare students to earn academic credit accepted by major colleges and universities. Fairmont Preparatory Academy’s Advanced Placement (AP) program has been recognized by the College Board as having one of the highest student success rates in the state of California in math, science, and technology. Fairmont does not limit the number of AP courses that a student can take. Many students begin taking AP courses as early as the 9th grade.

ADVANCED MATH

Fairmont Prep offers an elite mathematics program that is among the top high school programs in the country. The program provides a highly individualized approach to math education allowing students of all abilities to receive the customized instruction they need to achieve their highest potential in high school courses and on important college entrance tests.

The advanced math program is especially beneficial for students who excel in mathematics and who may wish to study math or a related field in college. Fairmont offers math courses typically unavailable at other high schools. Some courses include: Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations and Linear Algebra I & II, Mathematical Structures/Discrete Math.

Fairmont Preparatory Academy's advanced mathematics program is among the best in the nation. The program has been repeatedly recognized by the College Board and continues to receive acclaim. We offer each student excellent opportunities to progress and excel on national exams and in courses rarely offered at the high school level. Three of our teachers are university professors, allowing our student the chance to earn up to 22 units of university credit without leaving Fairmont Prep, and moving well beyond what is offered by AP, IB or most other high school programs.

The tremendous success Fairmont has had in math, science, and technology has been recognized by the Siemens Corporation and College Board's AP program as one of the top math, science, and technology schools in California: "Using data from the College Board's AP Report to the Nation, your high school has one of the highest success rates in your state in math, science, and technology subjects." -2009.

In 2011, 29% of Fairmont Prep's student body took the AP Calculus exam. Fairmont's average score was 4.1 out of 5, compared to 3.1 globally.
