Fairmont Preparatory Academy sophomore Alexisse Yoo is no stranger to victory, and last weekend was no exception — she earned four first-place awards, one second-place award, and one third-place award at the California Junior Classical League State Convention in Atherton, California.
Yoo won both the Academics and Creative and Graphic Arts categories against all high school students from the state of California. She also placed first for the Overall Student Award, which is given to one student per grade level and is determined by adding the score of the Arts, Academics, and Olympika (Athletics) categories. (She didn’t even compete in the Athletics category, but still had the highest overall cumulative score!)
Additionally, Yoo brought home an overall victory for Fairmont in the Small Schools Division, competing against schools such as Marlborough School, Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, Kehillah Jewish High School, California High School, and New West Charter School. As if she had not already collected enough hardware, she added a second-place finish in the Certamen category and a third-place finish in the Spirit category for the Small Schools Division to her growing list of accolades.
Aside from notching wins and expanding her Latin knowledge, Yoo was thrilled to be able to compete among her peers and become familiar with more friendly faces — and her impressive performance certainly didn’t go unnoticed by others at the competition.
“There was quite a bit of interest from other delegates from other schools about Fairmont Prep,” Yoo said excitedly. “I was able to meet so many more people who share my interests, and overall, it was a really incredible experience. I can’t wait for National Convention, where I hope I’ll be able to connect with even more people!”
Congratulations, and good luck at the national competition this summer!
