The International Baccalaureate (IB) organization celebrates its 50th anniversary this year as Fairmont Preparatory Academy celebrates its 25th anniversary. Fairmont Preparatory Academy is authorized by IB as an IB World School, part of over 4,500 schools around the world dedicated to the program.
Since its creation in 1968, the IB has strived to create “a better world through education.” The IB’s mission statement reflects this goal, stating, “The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”
Fairmont Private Schools’ President and CEO Mr. David Jackson saw the value in the program, and upon Fairmont Prep’s founding, the two-year program was implemented. Fairmont Prep received IB World School status in 1995.
By partaking in the IB program in high school, students receive college credit and receive an education emphasizing global thought, connections among subjects, and lifelong learning. Students at Fairmont Prep have 20 IB course offerings to choose from and may pursue an IB Diploma.
Is IB Right for Me?
If you’re considering taking IB courses at Fairmont Preparatory Academy in the coming years, you’ll want to take a few things into consideration.
Taking IB courses helps prepare students for college-level coursework, strengthens their critical thinking skills, and will assist them in getting into top colleges.
Students can take individual IB courses or choose to pursue an IB Diploma. When pursuing an IB Diploma, students partake in six specific subjects (language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts). At least three of these subjects must be taken at the higher-level (HL), while the rest may be taken at the standard-level (SL).
This differs from Advanced Placement (AP) classes in which students can choose to take as many or as few AP classes as they’d like, in any subjects they’d like. However, AP does not offer a diploma program or place emphasis on intercultural understanding. The programs have two different approaches, with IB consisting of a full program based around specific knowledge it desires students to leave high school with, while the AP program offers students more individualized options to help them explore specific topics of interest in more depth. Both programs supply college credit with successful completion of their courses; the right fit depends on the individual.
Fairmont Preparatory Academy is proud to be an IB World School. We have enjoyed watching our students partake in this rigorous and rewarding program and celebrating their achievements. Congratulations to the IB program on 50 years of education! We look forward to many more years of partnership.
