It’s almost spring break! If you’re lucky enough to have time off with your children during the break, plan some exciting activities for your family. The time will go by fast and that’s all the more reason to make sure every minute of it counts.

Hiking/Walks

The weather is predicted to be warm next week, a perfect chance to get the family outside! There are some amazing hiking and walking trails in Orange County and spring break is a wonderful opportunity to try them out with your family. Walk a trail by the beach, stroll through Irvine’s many parks, or take a trip inland and hike the Skyline Trail in Corona. Given Southern California’s recent wildflower blooms, this might be a great time to get some beautiful photos of the kids! See where the LA Times recommends hiking to see the flowers before they’re gone! Don’t feel like traveling? Even walks around your neighborhood in the evening or morning will mix up the day and provide great family time.

Beach Day

An obvious Spring Break activity, but one of the best: beach day! Pack up the car and spend the day at Huntington, Newport, Laguna, or even head down to San Diego for the day! Depending on your family’s idea of fun, you could spend the day biking at Newport, surfing at Huntington (Their bonfire pits mean s’mores in the evening!), or exploring Thousand Steps Beach. Bring plenty of snacks and sunscreen and you’ve got the ingredients for a perfect day.

Museums

If you’re in the mood for a drive, Los Angeles and San Diego both have whole areas of their cities dedicated to multiple museums! Exposition Park in LA is surrounded by three museums and the Space Shuttle Endeavor. Not too far away are also the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the La Brea Tar Pits, and the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust.  San Diego’s Balboa Park is home to a Natural History Museum, Museum of Art, Science Center, Air and Space Museum, Veterans Museum and more!

While those bigger museums are located mostly in Los Angeles and San Diego, Orange County does have local museums such as the Discovery Cube, Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, MUZEO, Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum, and more! Regardless of where you go, this is a great opportunity to teach your kids something new and learn as a family.

Aquarium of the Pacific – Sea Otter Exhibit

The endangered sea otter has grown in popularity over the years as their numbers have increased and are now a crowd favorite at aquariums! As Southern California residents, a visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific is as close as we can get to these cuddly creatures and a great chance to teach children about endangered animals and conservation. The aquarium, of course, has many other exhibits that will educate and wow your kids, but the sea otters will definitely stand out and provide a chance to learn about taking care of our world and its animal populations. Plus, they’re otterly adorable.

Volunteer

Learning opportunities aren’t solely academic. Use some of your child’s free time during break to show them the value of volunteering. It could be something simple from an impromptu beach cleanup to signing up with one of Orange County’s many non-profits for a day of volunteering. OneOC keeps a volunteer calendar to show open volunteer opportunities on a day by day basis, if you need ideas.

Theme Park

Of course, there’s always theme parks! Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, water parks, Universal Studios, SeaWorld – Southern California’s got them all! Just be weary of spring break crowds and, if the warm weather continues, bring lots of water.

Learn Something New

Free time over spring break can be an ideal time to help your children learn something new, like learning guitar, a new sport, cooking, or anything you’d like! Open days that are usually filled by school will give them lots of time to practice, make mistakes, and keep trying and learning. It will be all the better when they get the hang of it, knowing you did it together.
