Created by Renaissance Learning, Inc., Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized reading program where students’ reading progress is measured and monitored through an online portal or desktop software. The AR system assigns a point value to each book within their database library based on the number of words in the text and the recommended reading level. The system also considers sentence complexity and the number of syllables in specific words. Once the student reads a chosen book, he or she logs into the computer and takes a test measuring his or her comprehension of the reading.¬†At the 1st grade level, tests consist of five objective questions about important facts in the book. The AR system¬†scores the test, awards points based on performance, and keeps a complete record of results. The student must score at least 60% on the reading test in order to be eligible to earn points. Accelerated Reader provides teachers with an effective way to monitor all forms of independent and guided reading practice. As well as allowing the teacher to personalize reading instruction, intervene with students who need extra help, and allow students to thrive!
