During the weekend of October 14, the Orange County Debate League (OCDL) participated in a tournament at California State University, Fullerton. This tournament featured public forum (2-on-2 style), popular with the National Speech and Debate Association. Fairmont’s North Tustin campus was represented in the tournament by three students. Hitakshi S. and Harishri S. placed 2nd in the novice division, which includes high school students. Sophia J. placed 2nd in the middle school division, and also won 14th place speaker.

In addition, the OCDL participated in a scramble event on October 22, mixing students of different ability levels and school origins. Awards are given to the top 40 speakers with Hitakshi S. in 9th place, Harishri S. in 29th place, and Nadia A. in 34th place. Team awards are given to the top 20 teams, as Hitakshi S. earned 3rd place, Ved S. earned 8th place, and Ishika K. earned 17th place. The OCDL uses exclusively modified parliamentary (3-on-3) style. The event’s topics included debates regarding the use of animal fur, the future of the Electoral College, and schools’ roles in regulating students’ off campus electronic speech.

The Fairmont debate program began in 2007 when the North Tustin Campus participated in inter-scholastic competitions in the Middle School Public Debate Program (MSPDP). Today, Fairmont boasts membership for all three campuses in two leagues: OCDL and National Junior Forensics League (NSDA). Students have the option of joining one or both groups. In addition, debate elective classes are offered to junior high students at every campus. Novice and experienced students are welcome, as over half of Fairmont middle school students have participated in the debate program in previous years. The program is lead by Directors of Debate Ben Hughes and Doug Miller.
